DP WORLD is recruiting a Shift Superintendent to be based in Maputo, Mozambique.

Qualifications and Skills

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

  • Experience in container terminal operations will be an advantage. Appx: 6 to 8 years.
  • Experience in a supervisor role in a container terminal will be an advantage. Appx: 3 years.
  • Education: Minimum Degree level (Port Management, Business Management, Trade, Shipping and Logistics, or any relevant area).
  • Experience in managing container terminal operating systems (Zodiac, NAVIS, Cosmos, etc.).
  • Fully conversant with safety procedures.
  • Strong ICT skills.
  • Goal and achievement-oriented.
  • Decision-making and analytical ability.
  • Good communication skills. 
  • Proficiency in Portuguese and English.

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Operations

  • Responsible for safety & and discipline in the work area.
  • Provide inputs in defining the Quay and Yard strategy.
  • Manage employees, contractors, visitors, and processes; adhere to safety and operating policies and procedures to ensure the smooth running of operations and equipment; and meet customer and business requirements.
  • Conduct daily shift briefings along with supervisors before the start of the shift. Assists in determining berth allocation for scheduled vessels, and the number of Quay cranes to be assigned to them.
  • Obtain completed and updated information about the ongoing operations from the Shift Superintendent (in the previous shift) during shift change.
  • Ensure the availability of all the equipment and personnel required for the timely completion of scheduled vessel and yard operations.
  • Ensure corrective measures to avoid delays in operations due to potential congestion in the terminal.
  • Ensure receipt of updated information of vessel operations progress at scheduled intervals from the Planning/Control room.
  • Coordinate requests received from Berth Supervisors with the planning team for additional equipment, and based on vessel priorities, provide additional switchers.
  • Monitor if all the operations are proper and as per schedule and set processes through on-the-ground presence.
  • Ensure procedures and policies defined for moving and assigning locations to special containers are followed (reef, IMO label, hazardous cargo, leakage, damaged, etc).
    • Ensure housekeeping is done on time to minimize loading time.
    • Ensure equipment is arranged before dispatching switchers.
  • Ascertain requirements for adding equipment in a particular block.
  • Ensure that the port control department (marine) is updated and informed about the scheduled time of completion for the vessel.
  • Maintain a logbook (updated with all the operational details from the shift) to facilitate the operations of the next shift.
  • Ensure maintenance activities are carried out as per defined schedules for equipment.
  • Monitor equipment idle time. Ensure operators are on the job and after allocated break hours to minimize idle time, allocated to equipment to minimize impact of shift change and reduce equipment to optimize utilization.
  • Monitor and analyse the following factors daily: Quay carne productivity and utilization, utilization of the other quay resources, the completion time for vessel operations, yard capacity and equipment utilization, yard equipment/operator efficiency and productivity (Average yard equipment moves per TEU), daily attendance and employee behaviour report according with Our Principles.
  • Propose areas for operational improvement, system automation, and upgrade.
  • Assist the Operations Manager in performing periodical scheduled performance reviews with reporting personnel.
  • Active participation in the rostering planning to ensure the correct workforce planning for the shift.
  • Ensure the achievement of all operational KPIs established for the period. Identify the main reasons for not achieving the operational KPIs and propose measures to mitigate it.
  • Ensure proper utilization of the time & and attendance systems and reports approval.
  • Coordinate the operations according to the planning team guidelines.

People Development

  • Be fully engaged with the shift members and all their challenges, offer problem resolution, and conduct reviews and appraisals.
  • Active involvement in the hiring and staff development process, including but not limited to mid-term and year-end reviews. 
  • Succession planning and coaching.
  • Finding and grooming potential successor/s.

HSSE Leadership

  • Responsible for implementation and compliance with the HSSE policy, procedures, and SOPs.
  • Implement and comply with all HSSE procedures with external stakeholders.
  • Active and visible HSSE leadership
  • Active leadership and contribution to our company HSSE goals: zero fatalities, serious injuries, and serious spills.
