Short Description/ Purpose of Job

The Nutrition Officer will work on the management of nutritionally at-risk children under 6 months of age and provide messages and individualised counselling on proper infant and young child feeding practices and mothers/caregivers in crisis-affected IDPs and host communities in the Metuge district of Cabo Delgado.

Working together with the Ministry of Health, the District Health and Nutrition Officer, the Health and Nutrition Coordinator and technical advisors, he/she will plan, guide and support the implementation of MAMI activities in Metuge. He/she will support the effective implementation of the activities of the health and nutrition programme at local and community level. He/she will support the health and nutrition coordinator in the development and delivery of training packages and monitoring tools. The main objective should be to ensure that primary health care, with special emphasis on the MAMI package at community level as well as referral to care at hospital level, is provided with the support of community actors, in accordance with the Ministry of Health’s system policy.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Nutrition technician or nurse in maternal and child health (MCH).
  • Driving licence for motorbikes.
  • Experience and skills.

Essential

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in a similar position;
  • A good understanding of breastfeeding practices and nutritional assessment within the target community;
  • Ability to work to a tight deadline and under pressure;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and able to work in a multicultural team;
  • Motivated and prepared to work in the field areas under challenging conditions;
  • Ability to communicate with the flood-affected population;
  • Passionate about improving children’s lives;
  • Protect children in connection;
  • Non-discriminatory and gender sensitive;

Desirable

  • Experience of working in NGOs;
  • Experience in individual or group counselling;
  • Knowledge of the local language (Emakua) is an advantage;
