Short Description/ Purpose of the Job

The Development Officer will work in an area covering a population of 10,000 people and will work with multiple community groups (which include School Boards, Health Boards, Water and Sanitation Committees, ASCAs and peasant groups, committees or other CBOs) encouraging and supporting them towards greater action for self-care and other community members. This includes forging positive relationships between the Government and relevant community groups, to develop greater interaction and support and to lead to greater sustainability of initiatives.

The Development Officers also work with the Technical Coordinators to ensure that the necessary technical support is brought to their community groups.

Recruitment Description/ Key Accountabilities

Education and Knowledge

  •  High school level; preferably a degree in Development, Sociology or related areas.
  • Conceptual understanding of and commitment to development work among people
  • Basic knowledge of aspects of development work including health, education, food security, child protection, disaster management and advocacy.
  • Basic understanding of design, monitoring and evaluation Experience
  • At least three years of previous relevant experience, including at least one year in facilitating development within and with the community.

Skills/Abilities

  • Strong facilitation skills, including catalysing, connecting and empowering community groups
  • Strong communication skills, including across cultures
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability and commitment to listen to other people
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Be fluent in the language (Nharringa) of the area where you will be working, including Portuguese. English is not essential but is an asset.
  • Have a valid motorbike driving licence.

Working environment

  •  Community-based in the area allocated, but travelling to the District once a month.
