The position is located at the UNODC Programme Office in Mozambique (POMOZ), with duty station in Maputo, under the Regional Office for Southern Africa (ROSAF) Under its long-established mandates on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (including illicit narcotics, trans-national organized crime and terrorism), the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), upon their request, provides technical assistance to Member States on policy, legislation and institutional capacity to counter such threats at both the national and international level.

In the Southern African region, UNODC is an active partner in the region’s efforts to address the challenges of organised crime, drug abuse, terrorism and terrorist financing, while in Mozambique, UNODC, under various projects, has been strengthening the understanding and capacity of Mozambican criminal justice and law enforcement officials to undertake rule of law-based criminal justice measures for preventing and countering terrorism, terrorist financing and violent extremism. These projects are implemented by UNODC in close collaboration with the Government of Mozambique and in coordination with relevant regional and international organizations and UN entities.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Environmental Crime Associate, is expected to assist UNODC programmes in Mozambique and the region on activities related to the prevention and tackling of crimes that affect the environment, which include wildlife crimes but also criminal activities related to forestry, fishery, mining and waste management sectors.

He/She will be expected to:

  • Coordinate all necessary logistical and organizational support for the implementation of UNODC’s portfolio in the area of crime that affect the environment.
  • Deliver, as appropriate, technical assistance in the area of crime that affects the environment.
  • Liaise with relevant authorities in designing and delivering project in the area of crime that affects the environment, identifying most urgent needs, promote active engagement and ownership in the implementation of activities
  • Engage with partners, including other UN agencies, international organizations and non-governmental organizations to promote cooperation, coordination and synergy in the area of crimes that affect the environment
  • Manage resources allocated to UNODC’s in the area of crime that affects the environment, as required.
  • Perform any other duties as relevant.

The key results have an impact on the overall effectiveness and efficiency of the Programme Office and of the use of corporate resources, human, financial and material of UNODC Programme Office. The key results also impact on the image of the organization and its ability to deliver on its mandate.

Required Skills and Experience
 
Education:
  • Completion of High school/secondary school is a requirement.
  • First level university degree in law will be a strong recommendation, but not a requirement.
Experience:
  • A minimum of three years of progressive experience with (bachelor’s degree) or six years’ experience with (High school diploma or equivalent), including at least three years in the field of crime that affect the environment is a requirement.
  • Previous experience with international organizations or civil society organization is a requirement.
  • Previous work in the area of crime that affects the environment in Mozambique is a requirement knowledge of conservation areas mechanisms, rule and regulations).
  • Previous experience with working with an ERP system is desirable.
  • Previous experience with SAP is desirable.
  • Computer literacy, specifically skills in MS Office is a requirement. Knowledge of various administrative procedures of UNODC or the United Nations system in general would be an advantage.

Language Requirements:

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English and Portuguese (both oral and written) is a requirement; knowledge of other UN official languages is an asset.
