Short Description/ Purpose of Job

As part of an Equipa Integrada, and with the technical support of the Sr. Lab/Viral Load Specialist, the Lab Officer conducts regular visits to districts and health facilities to provide technical assistance to district and facility staff on laboratory issues related to HIV diagnosis, care, and treatment, towards the achievement of project targets. S/he works in close collaboration with other members of the Equipa Integrada to provide holistic technical assistance, following up on other areas as needed.

Core Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular technical assistance visits to health facilities to support improvement of laboratory-related services, including technical assistance on data use related to laboratory for quality improvement
  • Provide technical support in the development of DPS laboratory-related work plan activities. 
  • Support the preparation of the DPS Drugs Depot requisitions to central level and from SDSGCAS Drugs Depots to Provincial pharmacy warehouse. 
  • Provide strategic technical guidance to facility, DPS, SDSGCAS and laboratory staff in the field on laboratory programs, equipment, reagents, and overall strategy
  • Provide guidance and support in developing QA/QC systems for laboratories
  • Address technical queries in the area of laboratory equipment, services and programs
  • Advise, train, coach and perform on-the-job training for laboratory staff at health facilities.
  • Assist DPS and SDSMAS in strengthening Laboratory technical initiatives; including designs of new approaches as necessary according to the MISAU strategies
  • Assist with Monitoring and Evaluation efforts as necessary
  • As part of the Equipa Integrada, provides technical assistance and support to health facilities in other areas as needed, using technical assistance and/or monitoring tools. 

What We Value

  • Bachelor’s degree in laboratory sciences, or related field. 
  • At least 4 years of experience in laboratory setting, preferably in HIV/viral load. 
  • Sound knowledge of GRM guidelines, protocols, and strategies related to laboratory, including related to HIV.
  • Team player, able and willing to perform other unanticipated tasks as needed to achieve project goals
  • Good communication skills 
  • Diplomatic and able to relate and cooperate with the DPS, SDSGCAS, health facility staff, and other stakeholders
  • Good organizational skills and ability to write and interpret reports 
  • Willing to travel regularly to throughout the districts of the assigned province. 
  • Fluency in Portuguese required; English skills are an advantage
