Short Description/ Purpose of Job

The Technical Advisor – Child Protection will be responsible for the strategic supervision and implementation of all project components relating to child protection. This role will provide technical leadership to Save the Children’s efforts to influence and trigger changes in awareness, attitudes, behaviours and policies related to child protection in Mozambique. He/she will ensure good quality standards in our overall protection programme and ensure that evidence-based models and programme learning are key to achieving policy change and information sharing objectives.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Degree in Social Sciences, Sociological Development Studies or similar; or equivalent experience in the field;

Experience and Skills

Essential

  • At least 5 years of advocacy or counselling in the thematic area of Child Protection;
  • Ability to identify key gaps in child protection in a given context in order to provide a holistic response to children;
  • Experience in strengthening the understanding and response of various duty bearers to child protection;
  • Experience in preparing successful funding proposals for donors;
  • Ability to write clear and well-founded evaluations and project reports;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Strong influencing skills and advocacy experience;
  • Politically and culturally sensitive with qualities of patience, tact and diplomacy;
  • High level of written and spoken Portuguese and English;
  • Commitment to and understanding of children’s rights, Save the Children’s objectives and principles, in particular a good understanding of Save the Children’s mandate and child focus and an ability to ensure that this continues to underpin programmes;
  • Proven advocacy skills.
  • Strong commitment to capacity building of national staff and partners with a willingness to adopt participatory and consultative approaches;
  • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate and negotiate clearly and effectively at all levels, taking into account cultural and linguistic difficulties.
  • Strong results orientation, with the ability to challenge existing mindsets.
  • Experience in resolving complex issues by analysing, defining a clear way forward and ensuring buy-in.

Desirable

  • Ability to present complex information succinctly and convincingly.
  • Ability and willingness to drastically change working practices and schedules and work with emergency teams in the event of emergencies.
  • Commitment to Save the Children’s values, including a willingness to respect and enforce the Child Protection policy.
