Under the supervision of the Entomology Field Technician or Coordinator, the Insectary Technician manages the insectary and related activities.
Project Description
The PMI Evolve Project supports the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) and USAID to plan and implement an integrated vector control strategy with the overall goal of reducing the burden of malaria while promoting equity to sustain malaria gains. Abt has implemented integrated vector control for PMI since 2011, delivering high-quality indoor residual spraying (IRS), technical assistance for insecticide-treated net (ITN) distribution and durability monitoring, and new approaches for larval source management (LSM). Additionally, Abt’s PMI-funded work manages the most comprehensive malaria vector entomological surveillance programs in 21 African countries to inform malaria vector control trends, strategies, and impact. Under the PMI Evolve Project, Abt will further its delivery of integrated vector control programs by partnering with local communities, organizations, and governments to co-design and co-implement tailored malaria vector control programs. The end goal is fighting malaria while strengthening local capacity to sustain malaria gains.
Recruitment Description/ Key Accountabilities
Core Responsibilities
- Maintain mosquito colonies in the insectary.
- Ensure the feeding of lab animals and mosquito colony.
- Ensure and coordinate the cleaning of the insectary.
- Establish regularly the needs required for the insectary.
- Ensure the appropriate storage of equipment and animal food.
- Ensure appropriate records are kept in the laboratory log books.
- Assist with procurement requests related to this activity.
- Adhere to the Standard Operational Procedures (SOPs) for these activities.
- Participate in other field activities as required.
- Perform any other duty assigned by the Entomology Field Technician or Entomology Field Coordinator (as applicable) and Entomology Manager.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelors + zero years
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s in biology or any science or related degree
- At least six (6) month’s experience in laboratory or veterinary work.
- Knowledge in computer skills (able to run programs such as Microsoft word, Excel).
- Experience with laboratory animal rearing is an added advantage.
- Language requirements vary by country (English, French, Portuguese etc.)
