Short Description/ Purpose of the Job

This instrumentation specialist position is for a 3-month period and is responsible for preparing, organizing, and providing the necessary surgical instruments during a mini-laparotomy surgery to meet the increased demand and expand the range of FP methods offered in Nampula province. This will be done through the implementation of a visit schedule to peripheral health units that already have a demand for tubal ligation. The pre-established schedule defines the daily tasks to be implemented, and adjustments to this schedule may occur under the guidance of the provincial manager and in coordination with the cluster coordinators and respective SDSMAS (District Health, Women, and Social Action Services). The specialist works closely with the District Coordinator, Provincial Program Manager, and other team members, as well as SDSMAS counterparts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor the existing stock levels of medical supplies and materials to ensure that these do not hinder the provision of mini-lap services;
  • Prepare, organize, and provide the necessary surgical instruments during a mini-laparotomy surgery;
  • Prepare the operating room and instruments;
  • Sterilize equipment and dispose of contaminated material;
  • Assist the mini-lap specialist during the procedure;
  • Maintain the organization of the surgical table;
  • Organize and account for surgical instruments before, during, and after surgery;
  • Prepare monthly and final reports of the activities conducted at the district and provincial levels;
  • Provide bi-weekly updates on activities conducted at technical meetings.

Basic Requirements

  • Surgical Technician, Senior Maternal and Child Health Nurse with a surgical component, or General Practitioner with surgical qualifications;
  • Instrumentation technician with proven experience in mini-lap procedures;
  • At least 3 years of experience in surgical procedures or minor surgeries; knowledge of the equipment used in mini-laparotomies, sterilization techniques, and safety procedures in the operating room;
  • Availability to travel regularly to districts and from there to peripheral health units (90% of the time);
  • Solid knowledge of family planning, with technical skills for the insertion/removal of long-term methods;
  • Ability to work in a team and maintain working relationships with the government, non-governmental agencies, and other cooperation partners at the local level;
  • Maintain confidentiality of all information related to patients or the organization, even after the contract ends;
  • Ability to work under pressure and remain calm in difficult situations;
  • Commitment to the safety and well-being of patients;
  • Compassionate and attentive to patients;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in Portuguese and the Emakwa language.
